City Commission

The City Commission holds regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, and work sessions on the second Tuesday of the month. Unless otherwise noted, meetings start at 5:45 p.m. and will be held in the City Commission Room, First Floor of City Hall, 6 E. 6th Street.

About:
Brad Finkeldei is a community leader who has invested 20 years into volunteering to help make Lawrence a great place to live, work and raise a family. Prior to being elected to the City Commission, he served on boards for a number of community organizations, including Ballard Community Services, Lawrence Family Promise, the St. John’s Catholic Church Finance Committee and the Lawrence Jayhawk Rotary Club. Brad previously served on the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission.
 
Finkeldei is a partner with the law firm of Stevens & Brand, LLP, where he focuses his practice on litigation, banking and governmental law. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law, and a 1996 graduate of Kansas State University, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Economics. Brad is married to Amy Finkeldei and they have two teenaged daughters, Raegan and Chaney.

About:

Prior to be elected to the City Commission, Courtney Shipley served as Chair of Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods. She has also served on the Board of Zoning Appeals as well as the advisory board for the Transient Guest Tax Grant Program, Lawrence Preservation Alliance and Friends of Oak Hill Cemetery. 

 

A 30 year resident of Lawrence, Courtney Shipley graduated from The University of Kansas with a degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures and currently works as a property manager.

About:

Stuart Boley grew up in Lenexa, Kansas, and attended KU, graduating in 1977 with a B.A. in English and Modern European Studies. He met and married his wife Lisa in Lawrence.  Stuart worked in Houston, Texas and then in Washington, D.C. as an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service.  In 1983 Stuart and Lisa returned to Lawrence and together they raised their three children here. Stuart retired in 2009 after a 32-year career with the IRS. He also worked from 2011 to 2017 as the administrative officer of the Douglas County Community Foundation.

 

Over the years Stuart volunteered with the Lawrence Community Nursery School, the Schwegler Neighborhood Association, Boy Scout Troop 59, Friends of Eutin, the Sister Cities Advisory Board and the Lawrence Traffic Safety Commission.  Elected to the City Commission in 2015, Commissioner Boley served as Mayor in 2018. He also serves as a Master Food Volunteer with the Douglas County Extension Service.

About:

Lisa Larsen’s family moved to Larned, Kansas around 1971 after her father retired from the military. In 1981, Lisa earned her BS degree in Geology from Fort Hays State University. She lived in Lawrence from the mid to late 1980’s and returned in 1998. Her career has spanned more 30 years as an Environmental Geologist. She initially worked in the environmental regulatory field for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. In 1992, she started an environmental consulting firm, Larsen & Associates, Inc. In 2014 she sold her business.

 

Lisa has two children and five grandchildren. In 2010, Lisa became a Douglas County Master Gardener and currently serves on the board. Lisa was appointed to the City Commission in 2015 and was elected to the City Commission in 2017.

About:

Jennifer Ananda has lived in Lawrence since 2000. Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree in social welfare, and law degree from the University of Kansas. Jennifer worked at the Merc Co+op, the Lawrence Public Library, and served on several boards during her time in school. Jennifer went from law school to work at the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence doing facilitation and community organizing. After leaving the coalition, Jennifer opened a law practice with Boog Highberger, where she practiced civil and criminal litigation and immigration law. After doing litigation at the coalition for two years, Jennifer went to KU as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator and Policy Specialist. In 2018, Jennifer became the Title IX Coordinator at Emporia State University. Jennifer was elected to the Lawrence City Commission in 2017.

Jennifer was elected Mayor December 2019 and served as Mayor through December 1, 2020.
